Supplies of Low-Price Meat Sufficient
September 12, 2001

Belgrade, September 12 - There will be a sufficient supply of meat and meat products on the domestic market and retail prices will be reduced by 10-15%, it was agreed at a meeting between the Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic and the largest Serbian meat producers and manufacturers.

The government will help reduce both retail prices and production costs in the sector through a long-term strategy aimed at streamlining efficiency and component costs.

-We are going to make additional analyses in order to see what is in deficit at the moment in order to supply the market with products in demand at somewhat lower prices - Djindjic said.

Following the talks in the Serbian government building with representatives of industry producers and manufacturers, Djindjic told journalists that the present market price was high as a result of high production components prices, above all of fodder, but also of the adverse impact of draught and a lack of planning in the industry.

However, it is possible, Djindjic claims, to adjust the price of meat by cutting the price of maize, and also by reducing imports.

- Reduction of meat prices should lead to a more rapid turnover of that commodity and the realisation of greater profit - Djindjic added, expressing his belief that the country was on the right path to mapping out a long-term strategy for supplying meat for domestic and export markets.

Momir Jovanovic, director of the Neoplant factory, said that an abundant market supply was likely, noting that there was no great shortage of meat products at the moment.
