Resolute stand on terrorism
September 12, 2001

Pure terrorism: New York on fire
Pure terrorism: New York on fire
Belgrade, September 11, 2001 (Beta) - The Serbian government strongly condemns politically motivated violence, especially terrorist attacks, said Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic.

A resolute stand on terrorism at a global level is necessary. The roots and centres of terrorism must be destroyed, stated the Serbian Prime Minister, expressing his condolence for civilian casualties in today's terrorist attacks in the US.

Djindjic said that today's terrorist attacks changed the concept of security in the 21st century, because terrorism against states themselves has now become a reality.

Sahovic: No Yugoslav victims so far

Head of the Yugoslav mission to the UN in New York, Ambassador Dejan Sahovic stated on Thursday that no victims of Yugoslav origin had been reported so far in the terrorist attacks on the US

BELGRADE, September 13 - Head of the Yugoslav mission to the UN in New York, Ambassador Dejan Sahovic stated on Thursday that no victims of Yugoslav origin had been reported so far in the terrorist attacks on the US.

"The mission immediately circulated a note to a number of Yugoslavs with whom we're in touch, among whom are a number of young people who work in that part of New York. According to the information available so far, all Yugoslav citizens are fine and not one of them died in the attack," Sahovic told Radio Belgrade.

He announced that the Yugoslav Embassy in Washington was prepared to provide necessary information to Yugoslav citizens who wish to find out about victims of the attacks.

Quoting the New York Times daily, which released a partial list of the passengers killed on the airplanes that hit the World Trade Center in New York, Sahovic said that those lists "contain no names which would indicate people of Yugoslav origin or Yugoslav citizens."

"It is obvious that we are entering a phase in which a few individuals can hold all the world hostage. The possibility of effective confrontation by means of military force is slight, and therefore solutions to the crises in the many regions which may be possible terrorist centres should be put forward," said Djindjic.

He expressed hope that governments of the word's most powerful countries will not react with violence. "It is questionable whether a security system can be so perfected that such tragedies could be avoided. But another question is whether the problems in critical areas can be solved at the political level," said the Serbian Prime Minister.
