Everts again called Kosovo Serbs to take part in the elections
September 03, 2001

Pristina, September 3, 2001 (Beta) - OSCE Mission Head Daan Everts on Monday, September 03, again called Kosovo Serbs to participate in the general elections scheduled for November 17, because the election system was in favour of minority groups since they automatically get 20 places in the future Kosovo Parliament and the regulations regarding the prevention of one group being an absolute majority.

At a news conference in Pristina, Everts said that the future Kosovo Parliament would have a board for appeals whose decision on possible critical matters would be final.

Regarding the registration of voters, Everts said that after the appeals Serbian Patriarch Pavle, Yugoslav President Vojislav Kostunica, Serbian Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic, and Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Nebojsa Covic had made, the registration intensified, citing that some 40,000 displaced persons had so far registered.

OSCE Mission Head Daan Everts also stressed the necessity of Serbian participation in Kosovo political life, expressing, at the same time, understanding for the problems this community face.

- Boycott of the registration suits only to persons who are responsible for the present situation. We have problems in Kosovska Mitrovica only, because political leaders there are against registration. There is fear and confusion in Kosovska Mitrovica, but I hope the situation will change - said Everts.
