Donors increasingly interested in Brussels conference
June 28, 2001

BELGRADE, June 28 (Beta) - The number of donors interested in participating in the Brussels conference has increased markedly after the USA confirmed its participation, it was said at a press briefing in the Yugoslav Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

According to sources from Brussels, the number of 200 originally expected donors increased to 270, therefore some potential donors will have to be refused. The interest in financial investment in the FRY has increased markedly after the USA decided to participate in Friday's conference.

Yugoslav Assistant Foreign Minister, Jelica Minic, has said that donors are expressing great optimism about tomorrow's conference and it is estimated that the planned $1,3 billion sum might be exceeded.

The donors expect the process of the economic and social recovery of Yugoslavia to begin very soon. Tomorrow's conference is just the beginning of Yugoslavia's economic recovery, as a new regional donors' conference has been proposed for October.

October's conference should encourage Yugoslavia's cooperation with its neighbors on projects concerning the reconstruction of infrastructure, roads and other means of transport in the region, Miniceva said and added that successful results of cooperation will greatly influence the process of the region's integration into European institutions.
