The Hague - Reactions
June 19, 2001
The entering of the law on cooperation with The Hague tribunal into the parliamentary procedure has been postponed.
The postponement itself demonstrates once more how strongly the issue has stirred the public and that its potential charge is so huge that it can lead to serious concussions in the federal state, as well as to its possible end.
DOS's coalition partner at the federal level, the Socialist People's Party of Montenegro, utterly opposes the adoption of the law. It maintains that such law is unconstitutional since the Yugoslav citizens are not liable to extradition under the Constitution.
On the other hand, the politicians from DOS claim that Yugoslavia is obliged to respect all international duties resulting from its returning to the UN, including the cooperation with The Hague tribunal.
The Hague issue also reveals the increasing differences within the DOS itself.
We will try to cover this dispute as intensively and minutely as possible, since its result will largely influence the destiny of many generations living in these lands.
