ICRC publishes second edition of the "Book of Missing Persons in Kosovo" April 11, 2001
At the press conference in the Yugoslav Red Cross (JCK), head of the Belgrade ICRC office Peter Stocker said that the book serves as a reminder to the authorities in Belgrade and Pristina and to all those who can help shed light on the fate of the missing persons, and a debt to the anguished families. The names of the missing people from ethnic Albanian, Serb, Muslim, Romany, and other communities, are listed both in chronological order of disappearance and alphabetically, along with the data and place of their families' last contact with them. The first edition of the book, published in June 2000, listed 3,368 names, while the second edition lists 3,525 people. A total of 484 cases have been resolved - 190 were found to be alive and 294 were dead, office coordinator Francois Blancy said. Head of the Yugoslav Red Cross Tracing Service Branko Popovic said that many problems hinder gathering information on the missing persons, the main one being the absence of anyone in Kosovo and Metohija to provide answers to ICRC and JCK. President of the association of families of Kosovo missing persons Ranko Djinovic said that the book represents a testimony of family tragedies, noting that the association had reported 986 cases.
