April 6, Day of the Serbian National Library observed
April 06, 2001
The minister said that the German bombing of the building of the National Library on April 6, 1941 was just one of the attacks on the Serbian culture, which had not even been spared during the previous years although it was built in the foundations of the Serbian being. Stating that the annihilation of the national being and national institutions had lasted the whole of the last decade, Lecic pointed out that the mechanisms should be created which would keep culture from returning to its beginning again on some other occasion. Lecic called writers to give up envy and shame and to choose the best among us, because the protection of national interests called for full physical, psychological and emotional engagement and nothing should impede us to enthrone the real values. Speaking of efforts of the Ministry to create a new cultural model which should be a spiritual and national programme, he said he expected everyone to contribute and the intelligentsia to re - establish live contacts with people, not to set aside and despise them. The Minister Lecic then presented the line - engraved edition of " The Duke Miroslav's Gospel" to the director of the Serbian National Library Milomir Petrovic. In his speech to the assembly, Petrovic reminded the bombing of the Library in 1941. was an attempt of the assassination of the soul, mind and the root of the Serbian people and that the date had been observed for 28 years so that the genocide over the book should not be forgotten.
