Russian newspapers about the Balkans: Europe must decide
March 21, 2001

Moscow, March 21 (Tanjug) - Russian newspapers evaluate that, independently from the result of today's talks between Russian and Macedonian officials in Skoplje, it is likely not that they can stop the war in the Balkans.

"Ethnic Albanian extremists can be stopped only by firm line of the West, and it would be better to take it together with Russia", daily "Commersant" assesses today.

"Nezavisimaja Gazeta" under the title of today's newspaper wrote that "NATO would not fight separatists", and quoted that in Brussels, where Macedonian Foreign Minister Srdjan Kerim was, they in fact refused to help Macedonia.

Officially condemning the act of ethnic Albanian extremists in the territory of that Balkan country, NATO refused to send its units in order to help Macedonian authorities, gave Skoplje full freedom of action, but in that way, actually put aside solving the problem, Moscow daily points out.

The newspaper "Novaya Izvestiya" warns today western countries that they should decide between Albania and Europe.

On that occasion, it is assessed that ethnic Albanians in Kosovo were morally disarming KFOR soldiers with their irrationality, and in Macedonia, Macedonians, so west politicians could get down to cultural anthropology a little, commentator of the newspaper writes.

"For majority among them, Kosovo Albanians were, two years ago, pawns in the game for removing Milosevic's regime in Belgrade", and in the fight against one evil, stakes on the other must not be placed, the paper stresses.

Pointing out that it has in mind "barbarity" of ethnic Albanian separatists, commentator points out that the West, allowing extremists to continue towards "greater Albania", essentialy carries out "hellish cocktail of tribal cruelty, sanctified with Islam" to the Balkans.

Daily "Izvestiya" also considers that things has gone too far in the Balkans and that they start getting out of control.

"Now it is too late. Too much time has been lost. Two years ago, one should thought about on who to place stakes, whom to proclaim military criminals and who are innocent victims", the "Izvestiya" points out.
