Planned destruction of Serb inheritance in Kosovo and Metohija
March 05, 2001

New York, March 4 (Tanjug) - Ethnic Albanian extremists are still destroying monuments of Serb culture in Kosovo and Metohija according to the plan, historian of art Marina Belovic-Hodge warned at the lecture in an Orthodox church "Sveti Sava" in New York.

According to this scientist from the USA National Gallery, from 1300 significant Serb monuments pertaining to the history of culture in Kosovo and Metohija, at least 100 were completely destroyed, while a considerable large number was seriously damaged.

Marina Belovic-Hodge claims that NATO bombardment of Yugoslavia also caused huge damage to architecture and frescoes of Serb places of worship, including the monastery Gracanica. Due to shaking, walls are falling to pieces, and frescoes are being separated from wall supports and gradually fall apart. If these frescoes, many made in the period between 13 and 17 century, are not preserved on time, they will be lost forever, she warned.

After the NATO bombardment, a wave of vandalism of unprecedented proportions appeared, it was said at the lecture. Ethnic Albanian extremists, according to the plan, destroy with explosives everything that belongs to Serbs and is valuable, and consequences are priceless.

It is sad, Mrs. Belovic-Hodge stated, because UNSECO, from which Yugoslav and American experts asked intervention and help, refuses to cooperate in order to save Serb inheritance in Kosovo and Metohija.

Marina Belovic-Hodge's lecture was organized by Njegos foundation within Columbia University in New York.
