Britain supports the Belgrade plan
March 02, 2001

London, March 1 - NATO military experts support the Yugoslav and Serbian government's plan for solving the crisis on the administrative border of Kosovo and Metohija, and its realization could start soon, it was announced in London today.

The Belgrade ideas, known as the Serbian Deputy Prime Minister "Nebojsa Covic's plan", are seen as the only effective way not only for curbing the tensions in the Presevo valley, but also for preventing ethnic Albanian extremists from destabilizing Macedonia, the London Times claims.

Official Great Britain is also supportive of the Belgrade plan, Foreign Office head Robin Cook confirmed after yesterday's talks with Yugoslav Foreign Minister Goran Svilanovic.

However, in its implementation, which calls for the change in the status of the ground safety zone, Yugoslavia has to meet certain prerequisites according to the NATO demands. Nevertheless, Cook stated that they would not wait for the demands to be met, and that the realization of the plan would be "a parallel process" and a common activity of Yugoslavia and NATO.

According to the British analyses, we get the impression that NATO is much more concerned over the ethnic Albanian extremists' intention to destabilize Macedonia.

It is assessed in London that an extremely important thing is to prevent extremist activities around Presevo and Bujanovac, which are regarded as an introduction to an ethnic Albanian rebellion in Macedonia. That is why the first phase of the "Covic's plan" will be realized in the area between the borders of Macedonia, Serbia and Kosovo.

NATO wants to provide concrete aid to Macedonia, and the surveillance planes are already monitoring the border area towards Serbia and Kosovo and Metohija, so as to provide the Macedonian Government with the information on ethnic Albanian extremists' movement.
