London: No justice in Kosovo, only revenge February 13, 2001
A delegation of the committee has been in Kosovo-Metohija, its members told the Times, and established that the judiciary set up by UNMIK does not have objective or professional judges. There are great doubts about the newly-appointed judges, who are also burdened by their ethnic origin. British Bar, even a year ago, warned about the tragic situation in judiciary in Kosmet, but nothing has been done for things to change so far. British Foreign Minister Robin Cook then promised that Britain would help Kosmet with its own judges. 200 lawyers and judges willing to go to Kosmet and help, applied to government's organs, but until today, no one left. The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE) pointed to the tragic situation in its report from October 18, and Amnesty International warned about it. But, British lawyers said, the international community has done nothing yet. British lawyers observe that tragic situation is most commonly justified by what happened in the past. But, they emphasize "we live in the present tense and therefore present situation must change, and there lies the responsibility of those who decide now". Indicating the responsibility of the former UNMIK chief, Bernard Kouchner, they point to the arrival of new administrator Hans Haekkerup as "a new hope that things could change".
