The UNHCR requires the international investigation on the murder of the Romanies in Dosevac
November 11, 2000

Geneva, Pristina, November 10 (Tanjug-agencies) - The United Nations High Commissary for Refugees (UNCHR) asked today in Geneva that an international investigation on the murder of four Romanies on Wednesday in Kosovo and Metohija be started.

The victims were found with firearm wounds in their heads, in Dosevac, 20 kilometers west from Pristina, where they had returned, assisted by the UNHCR. The UN police opened the investigation on that case.

UN officials condemned today the murder in Pristina, suggesting that the four Romanies had been killed in order to discourage others to come back to their homes.

The special UN agency deputy for refugees, Eric Morris, said that "a great effort has been done to create trust between the Albanians and Romanies", but that the murder in Dosevac showed that "the words are not enough".

Morris said that that murder left a terrifying impression on the non-Albanian population, who left their homes, as well as discouraged them to return.

He appealed to the authorities in Kosovo and Metohija to give their priority to the legal system implementation, adding that the time had come for them to say that the guilty ones must be punished.
