Serbs in enclaves in the most difficult conditions
September 15, 2000

President of the Red Cross of Kosovo and Metohija, Dr.Bora Moracic stated, yesterday, to the Tanjug agency, that Serbs in villages, surrounded by ethnic Albanians in Kosovo and Metohija are in the most difficult conditions, since the arrival of UNMIK and KFOR peaceful mission in the southern Serbian province.

Team of provincial Red Cross and mobile ambulance with Serb doctors from Kosovo and Metohija recently have visited Gojbulja, Babin Most, Grace, Plemetina, Crkvena Vodica, Lipljan, Orahovac and Velika Hoca.

"We convinced ourselves of difficult security conditions, because Serbs did not dare to go to their fields and woods and now they are afraid to go out because ethnic Albanians come to those villages and attack not only old people but children, even in mid day", Dr. Moracic, who attended a meeting of Executive Committee of the Red Cross of Serbia in Belgrade, said yesterday.

Moracic stressed that the children are especially endangered and that 90 children from Serb villages, surrounded by ethnic Albanians, arrived in rest home of Belgrade Red Cross in Bogovadje, for ten days recovery, thanks to courage of Yugoslav Red Cross drivers.

During visit of Serb villages, Dr.Maricic stressed that humanitarian help, health care and medicines were given to Serbs, thanks to mobile ambulance.

"Humanitarian help from international organizations are getting smaller. Some organizations withdrew themselves, like Medicines Sans Frontieres, and those which remained in the northern, Serb part of Kosovo and Metohija, establish new, restrictive criterions for users of help, justifying those intentions, allegedly, because of better humanitarian situation", Dr. Maricic pointed out.

Needs for every kind of food, especially flour, are large. Next winter and lack of firewoods worries us especially.

"Serbs in villages Gojbulji, Grac, Lipljan, Plemetina…have their woods, but cannot go there because they are afraid of ethnic Albanians, so that they cannot cut woods and prepare for fire. They cannot go to mills to mill wheat, because ethnic Albanians use those mills exclusively, so the flour will be needed for Serb population", explained Dr. Moracic.

"Serbs' social situation in northern Kosovo and Metohija is getting worse. We opened people's kitchens in Zvecane and northern Mitrovica, and we are negotiating with International Committee of the Red Cross and International Federation of Societies of Red Cross and Red Crescent in order to open pupil kitchens for Serb children in villages which are surrounded by ethnic Albanians", Dr.Moracic said.
