Teams and athletes of the year January 17, 2000
This year, volleyball player Vladimir Grbic, handball player Nedeljko Jovanovic, football player Sinisa Mihajlovic, chess players Alisa Maric and Natasa Bojkovic, basketball player Dejan Bodiroga, rower Ognjen Filipovic, karate expert Predrag Stojadinov, athlete Olivera Jevtic, archer Jasna Sekaric and kick boxer Ivan Strugar were nominated for the appellation. Karatist Roksanda Lazarevic was chosen for the best young female athlete of Yugoslavia, before boxer Geard Ajetovic and maker of model airplanes Ivan Kolic. Lazarevic won a golden medal at the World Championship in Bulgaria.
Belgrade, December 23 - At this evening's ceremony at the Hyatt Regency hotel in Belgrade, the editor-in-chief of the "Sports journal" daily, Momcilo Jokic awarded the prizes to the best Yugoslav athletes and teams in 1999, in the traditional prize award of this paper. In the male competition, footballer Sinisa Mihajlovic, member of Yugoslav national team and Italian Lazio, was declared to be the "athlete of the year", The best Yugoslav women's athlete in 1999 is the karatist Roksanda Lazarevic. The best junior this year is a 17 year-old aircraft model constructor Ivan Kolic. Dr Dragan Zivotic, the manager of the athletics club "Partizan", was declared to be the "manager of the year" in the Yugoslav sport. The most successful national team in 1999 is the Yugoslav women's chess team.
Belgrade, December 19 - The Yugoslav Olympic Committee has voted athletes of the year Nedeljko Jovanovic, member of the country's handball team that won the bronze medal at the the 16th Men's World Handball Championship in Egypt, and Olivera Jevtic, winner of the gold in a 10,000-m race and the bronze in a 5,000-m race at the 2nd European Under-23 Championship in Goeteborg, Sweden.
Jovanovic was also voted the best defender at the world handball championship, while Jevtic also won the bronze medal at the European cross country championship in Velenje, Slovenija. Yugoslavia's chess team was voted the best women's team for winning the silver at the European chess championship, while the handball team was voted the best men's team for winning the bronze at the World championship in Egypt and qualifying for the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, next autumn.
The Committee conferred its traditional trophy and medal to Rajko Mitic and Stjepan Bobek, the best football players in Yugoslavia in the 1950's and 1960's.
